IT on a Shoestring
2026-10-23 –, Trail Rooms

Most small businesses don't have an IT department, they have one overworked person wearing five hats, or nobody at all. This talk is a practical playbook for small business owners and the accidental IT people tasked with keeping things running: documentation, backups and disaster recovery, automation, compliance basics, and, just as important, knowing when it's time to call in outside help.

Small businesses rarely have the budget or headcount for a dedicated IT department, but they still face the same risks as companies ten times their size: data loss, downtime, compliance requirements, and security threats. This talk is built for the small business owner or the one person internally who's been handed IT responsibilities on top of their actual job.

We'll cover IT management fundamentals that don't require a big budget: documentation practices that save you when something breaks, disaster recovery basics so a bad day doesn't become a business-ending one, automation you can set up without hiring a developer, and a plain-language look at compliance requirements that actually apply to small businesses. We'll close with honest guidance on when DIY IT stops making sense and it's time to bring in outside help, and how to make that call before a small problem becomes an expensive one. The talk ends with open Q&A so attendees can bring their specific setups and questions.
